Torrents
Torrents are small files that contain the details of the other – more substantial – files that can be downloaded. The torrents themselves are placed online for others to download; once downloaded the torrents give an indication the location of the required files on other computers. A software system called a ‘tracker’ helps to collate the information on currently active computers within a file sharing network, those assisting the download of the files described in the torrents. The tracker maintains lists of the clients currently participating in the torrent. Clients – or peers – can connect to one another and obtain the required files. In some systems ever peer acts as a tracker: this is a trackerless system and is implemented by some of the larger torrent networks. Those wanting to obtain the files shared by others simply have to search the web for torrents of the required files. They then download it, and open it with a BitTorrent client. The user then waits for his or her file to be downloaded and then it is time to enjoy!
