Iron Cactus Is The Place For Mexican Food
If you’re an Austin, Texas vegetarian looking for great Mexican food then you’re probably as frustrated as I was. Until yesterday, that is, when I stumbled into the Iron Cactus Mexican restaurant in Austin, Texas. I was dragged there by my meat-eating boyfriend with the expectation that I would be eating a side salad. Again. How wrong I was. After a few drinks on the very pleasant rooftop bar (complete with ‘Authentic’ Mexican band!) we went downstairs to try the food. I opened my menu and I really was pleasantly surprised. This was a Mexican restaurant that had clearly made an effort to cater for us vegetarians. I ordered the vegetable fajitas. My boyfriend plumped for the fish tacos and tortilla soup. All were excellent. What really impressed me was the friendliness and helpfulness of the staff there: when I ordered the vegetarian fajitas the waitress asked if I minded that they were prepared in chicken stock. I said I did and she replied — to my surprise! — that this was fine and that she would simply ask chef to make sure I got some of the true vegetarian fajitas. Wow! This is something I’d never heard of before! The Iron Cactus in Austin, Texas has the best mexican food ever! I will definately be coming back.
