File-Sharing Networks Hit by Comcast Agreement
“Net neutrality” is not something that the average Internet user worries about when they cannot sleep at night. But following the recent agreement between Comcast and the US 9th Circuit Court, it is an issue that threatens to affect just about everybody who has a computer and an Internet connection.
Until this agreement was reached, there had been no restrictions placed on content, sites, or platforms that users accessed on the Internet. Users were able to access any file-sharing network, like Ares Vista, and were free to download music, video, and other files, without giving it a second thought.
But now, Internet Service providers like Comcast and Verizon, will be able to favor their own networks over competitors like Ares Vista and iTunes. They will have the power to slow down popular networks like Ares Vista, yet still allow their own – such as VCast run by Verizon – to operate freely with no restrictions. Users may well discover that they are being charged a premium to use popular file sharing networks such as Ares Vista.
This is of course disastrous for consumers as they will be financially penalized for choosing to use file-sharing networks not being run by their Internet Service Providers.
There is a discussion on Ares about its legality. Read the complete details here: Ares: Is it no charge or illegal?
